Senses

I smoked my regular cigarette today

The spirals of fumes

Entwining , parting my lips

My mind, oscillating into labyrinths of uncertainties

But , for something,

I was certain , that uncertainty,

Is what I choose, over and over again.

The flush of nicotine trembling my body

Making me more closer to my self

Maybe , I felt a feeling

A ripple of sensation

After a very long time .

AROMA

The food in my plate tastes bland
I try to awaken my senses,
savour each and every bite.
It still tastes bland.
Have my senses failed or is my food simply bad?

I try to recollect the ingredients and garnishes
to the lively platter staring upon me
anticipating to be devoured,
in all guts and glory.

The subtle aroma of extra virgin
 oil,
the hiss and splutter of condiments amalgamating,
the formation of layers and textures
what a wonder to witness.
Alas! The food has failed me.

Years ago, I remember asking my mother
"ma, how do I make my food as good as yours"
She replied with a smile,
"put your heart and soul into anything you do,
and the result is always enriching"

I look at the plate in front of me.
There is no doubt, this platter has my heart and soul,
with a  blend of soothing tunes in the backdrop.
My mother was perhaps wrong,
the food still tastes bland and blasé.

My attention shifts to the plate holding the food
lately; I have indulged into the wonders of ceramics
The creation of earthenware’s fascinate me
So vulnerably beautiful, emblazoning like fireworks,
ready to shard into million pieces.
The Japanese did well
they gave us
‘kintsugi’
healing broken objects.
Romanticizing our own scars.

I shift my focus on the plate,
trying to visualize the story
Of these billowing paisley,
dancing on the edges.

The spoons handle~ a filigree of intricate details,
resembling a dancing peacock.
I put a spoonful into my mouth,
it does not make me feel any better

Years ago,
I remember sitting on my stuffy little room
coming back after a tiresome day,
fixing myself a quick dinner,
ready to collapse into bed
I remember how heavenly the food tasted
could I possibly recreate the same food now?

Distortion

The beautiful man came along
 In a horse carriage

An embodiment of beauty and mystified whiff
ready to whisk me in a jiff

A careless whisper
On my lips
I rode along behind your hips

You wanted to show me guts and glory
I kept my keen on reading the lines of your body

You held my hands
directed my gaze to the brightest star.
I looked down upon your eyes
trying to search for dimmer lights.

Imagined communities.

home , a place where my mother birthed me
nursed me , gave me things i desired.

slowly, my surroundings cocooned me
making me more like itself ,quite naturally!

adolescent seeped and withered by
home still remained home,
repetition is what we are all meant for
except a chosen few

an intriguing horse caught hold of my eye
it showed me promises of miles and miles
i rode the tempestuous pony
boy, it felt liberating

i more i rode that pony , the more i felt like home
the farther it went, the more i felt like home
the more unknown people i met , the more they radiated  love

that time of roaring twenties,
fighting with the identity crisis that immeasurably captivated me
i slowly began to realize,
we were never ever made to be confined to one place
we were the unstoppable stardust of the galaxy
scattered around like flickers of ashes
landing anywhere the direction of the wind took us

we were a part of this vast expanse of  universe,
wherever we choose to home ourselves

home was a feeling, a part of life
a fleeting time where i spent copious amount of time
a place where i was flickered and landed.

the farther i went away from home, i more i felt like home.

catching feelings in Bohemia

Miles and miles away from home
I waltz my way across a profound alien town
As we walk across the cemetery intersections
I notice the depth of your voice,
So deep, it sends shivers down my spine.

Few nights later,
We walk up the Stalin wall
One drink after the other
I may be losing my grip
I couldn’t blame myself
The air is infectious up here
You give me your hand
safely guiding me along the rickety stairs
I feel your naked flesh for the very first time
Your hands briefly clasped upon mine.
Bees swarming upon my head
I try to brush your thoughts aside
Only to be consumed by it again.

As the Days go by…
I steal glances of you, time and again
That tender aura you emanate
the way you brush  your hair
those penetrating look in your eyes.

How I wish at times
I could understand you better,
The continent you hail from,
The values you adhere to,
the silly jokes you laugh at,
the story behind the void in your eyes
reflecting from time to time.

I close my eyes
Swaying myself in this picturesque city
seeming like a fairy tale,
haunted with  tales of passion and love.

If wishes were horses,
I would with all my heart
Make you a wreath for your beautiful finger
Adorned with lilacs and lavender
Wedding you in my memory forever.

My Dear June

My dear June
much has changed
these past few years.
Time and again you remind me
how distant I’ve turned out to be
We once dreamt of sitting
By the river Thames
discussing  the futility of life.
Those plans of walking down Mount Fuji
On a Sakura season
glimmering with cherry blossom
embracing the absurdities of life
No matter how distorted it maybe.

You now complain
About the way I view my life,
Gathering facts and being rational.
I still remember that night
I wrote you that poem
"Rationality walking miles behind".
I felt so accused and embittered
That you so casually told me
ive changed and my choices refined.

I have become
More like the amaltas
Of the scorching Delhi,
Blooming at a 45degree temperature
Yet not able to leave the spectators
With a sigh of relief.
Soon these amaltas will wither off
And perish in the coming time
Like all living things
For, autumn will seep in
And winter shall follow up.

You see June,
The cycle of life has taken its toll on me
I’ve got early morning chores to catch up
Followed by a routine check up
Of Suri, my miserable little kitten.

These days I lay on my bed
Immersed in folklores of my town
I think about the lovely union
Of our majestic river Teesta and Rangit.
Embracing each other at Triveni
And flowing together towards the Bay of Bengal
After a tumultuous wreck of separation.

It provides me a certain solace
To sing the song of mighty Kanchenjunga,
Being able to wake up early morning
Glancing at the majestic cotton clouds
shoving its way through my bedroom window.

But how can I explain it to you?
The emptiness, the longing, the familiar faces,
The rants of my neighbour,
The crystal clarity of these mountains,
And my local cabbie guy ‘kancha’
Standing at my doorway
Grinning with his beetle stained teeth.
Ready to be at our service.

You still dream of big cities and glass hallways
And visit home  once or twice a year.
However, I want to live with my town-girls
And be like your mothers friends
Who sit for hours at the local tea shop.
And juggle errands like life is
A brewing pot of coffee
Happily offered to passerby.

Every time you come home June,
I want to welcome you with my arms wide open,
Bring you your favourite  cookies
Listening to your tales of adventure
and never ever envy you.

I met your father the other day,
He always misses your presence
I also met your mother the other day,
She misses having you around
Longing for you to take over
That hard toiled business set up
She has it over a decade.

While you,
You still want to stay there
Writing that novel of yours;
Which no one will ever read.

At times,
I feel extremely lonely
Because people say things;
That the town has nothing to offer
And how a change of setting can renew one’s life.
At times like these,
I call upon our local cabbie guy ‘kancha ‘
And sit in his cab with the fellow co-passengers -
Listening to the parables of love
And struggles of our home folks.
They never fail to put a smile on my face
At times like these,
I feel so invigorated
they always have new things to say.

I visit my ailing grandfather
And listen to his tales of the early times .
Looking at my grandma’s hand spun straw shoes
Grandpa proudly tells me
How my late grandma in those times
Was the first woman
To take matters to a local panchayat body
In order to fight for her right.
My grandfather has become the
philosopher friend of my life
Unknowingly filling the void
Of my escalating heart many times.
Especially, When I think of myself more
Than the world around me.

Last  Saturday ,
I took a merry go round
To the local tourist viewpoint
And watched in silence
As the guide vociferously talked about the British Raj.
Of the 1940’s and the repercussions
Faced by my townsfolk

It reminded me of what my grandmother once told me -
“back then, locals carried British man on their back”,
I suddenly remembered
“Our backs tell stories no books have the spine to carry”.

My dear June,
I have driven miles and miles
And there are miles and miles to go
Before I sleep.
Now if you excuse me for a moment,
I have to go and fix the constant rattle
Of the adjoining door.

Troubled times

There is no war that ends all wars, said Murakami
The struggle for power is an ongoing process
The bloodbath simultaneous.

The minds and emotions of humans as fickle as ever.
led by an array of consciousness and subconsciousness.
There are times when i do not even  trust myself.

Perhaps, a dying man groaning will realize that the dagger,
that staggered him is a self-inflicted
carefully crafted illusion of the lives that we live in
created by boundaries and nationalities.
